About MyWord

This site was created by Study Technologies in 2001. The Montrose Group has owned the site since 2007 although the original author plans to continue adding content to the site.

The purpose of this project is to develop, demonstrate and promote a better way for people to clear up the meaning of a word.

The Internet world is a new world. Many things are possible that were not practical until now. So we decided to experiment. To wipe the slate clean and take a fresh look at the problem. To seek the "ideal" design for today's world that would best help people fully "understand" the meaning of a word. This is a bold project. There are several things that will be new to most people - different from what one is used to seeing.

Here are some of the guidelines for the project.

  1. Use more pictures, fewer words.
  2. Use no abbreviations.
  3. Write "action definitions".
  4. Avoid words that are likely to be misunderstood.
  5. Provide an easy way to quickly check definition of any word on a page.
  6. Avoid too much information that might overwhelm.
  7. Include enough examples of how the word is used. This is more important than the definition itself.
  8. Use real examples, not made-up examples.
  9. Use sound files rather than phonic pronunciations.
  10. Include the word origin when it is known.
  11. Include other words that are related to the meaning.

We hope this will avoid confusion people often encounter with "dictionaries".
